Los profesores lo dicen...cantando

Teachers Lip Dub
(A lip dub is a type of video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video. It is made by filming individuals or a group of people lip synching then dubbing over it in post editing with the original audio of the song. They are done in a single unedited shot while listening to a song or any recorded audio on a iPod.)

He leído una noticia que quiero compartir.
Bloomingdale teachers
(Teachers at Bloomingdale high school, in Valrico, Florida, are tired of students breaking the rules and they say they're not going to take it anymore...and sing it.)
("We love our students. We're just poking a bit of fun at their bad habits," says TV production teacher Jim Anteau.)

(The music video, set to the classic Twisted Sister tune "We're Not Gonna Take It," is a chance for teachers to vent.)
The Principal's office
(The video begins with the principal, who has a texting, dress-code breaking student in his office.)
("Hopefully they'd get the picture: stop using cell phones, dressing the way you do, making out, chewing gum and those sort of things. It was fun," says teacher Jim Willis.)
(The two Bloomingdale High School teachers gathered about 25 other teachers one afternoon and in an hour, made this lip-syncing music video that's gone viral on the Internet.)
("The teachers were exhausted. They had to run to four different locations on campus. They ran 20 times from the cafeteria all the way around the school," explains Willis.)
Teachers Lip Dub
("It was quite shocking. A lot of teachers didn't look like teachers," says senior Rily Scaife. "They wore hats, baggy pants, and iPods in, cell phones out. We were flabbergasted, didn't know it was them.")
(While the making of the music video has been a lot of fun, teachers and students say it's also helped improve their relationship in the classroom. Students now see their teachers in a new light.)
("We understand more teachers are able to have fun, laugh about us and them," says Rily.)
("I'm hoping students see a lighter side to teachers' personalities. We're professional during school hours, but we're human beings too. We like to laugh as well," says Anteau.)
(Willis says since the video, students seem to listen more, "They're more open to what teachers are saying now.")

Why does cramming not work

(The human brain, with roughly 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion interconnections between those neurons (synapses), can be equated to a computer with a 1,000,000,000,000 bit per second processor. Your brain can store everything: your brain has the capacity to store everything you experience, see, read or hear. It can hold 5 times as much information as the Encyclopedia Britannica, about 10 trillion pages. However, the real issue is recall — whether you can access that information.)

Diccionario de la Real Academia Española
empollar
: (tr. jerg. estud.) Preparar mucho las lecciones. U. t. en sent. despect.

Oxford Dictionary
cram - prepare (students) hastily for an impending exam
bone, bone up, grind away, mug up, swot up, cram, drum

(Human memory is the brain function resulting from synaptic connections between neurons. It allows humans to retain past experiences. Memories are created when neurons integrated in a circuit reinforce the strength of synapses.)

Brain regions

(There is no single physical location for the memory in our brain. Memory is disseminated by various specialized locations. While memories of our earliest childhood are stored in some regions of the temporal cortex, the meaning of words is stored in the central region of the right hemisphere and the training data in the parieto-temporal cortex. The frontal lobes are involved in organizing the perception and thinking. Many of our automation, in turn, are stored in the cerebellum.)

(Why does cramming not work? There is a biological reason for this. The problem is that cramming information places it into our brains in short term storage. This is where you put everyday information that is not really worth remembering. In order to learn we have to transfer information into long term memory. Once there, you can retrieve it far easier over a longer period of time.)

Memory model

Memoria a corto plazo

(Short term memory: All information is processed in the brain and stored in short term memory. The problem is that its capacity of storage is very limited (7 + 2 items) and the information is not kept for very long (10 seconds to 1 minute without rehearsal). Sure you may keep information for a day or two, but only when you make an effort to remember something repeatedly do you transfer that information into the other kind of memory: long term memory.)

Memoria a largo plazo

(Long term memory: This is the type of memory used when we want to store information in a more permanent way. This is either done by making information especially memorable (like getting burned means not to play with fire) or by repetition. Ever try to remember a new phone number? How many times do you look it up before you remember it?)

Cramming by Norman Rockwell (1931)

(Course information is the same thing. If you're learning something new it's harder to remember. It takes constant review and trying to remember specific information before you actually can. Once something is transferred from short term to long term memory we say it has been learned.)

(Cramming fails because you're relying on short term memory which usually fails under stress, as when you have to take an exam. The brain requires time for new concepts to percolate into your deeper memory. Time allows all your new thoughts to sort themselves out so they can be retrieved when you need them.)

(Last minute cramming does not give your brain time to do this.)

Cramming before taking an exam

(What happens a few minutes before the start of the exam? Many of the students have their nose in the book and they are desperately trying to get as much as possible out of it.)

(That kind of behaviour before taking the exam is not good practice. It will not really help you to achieve a good result. It is much more useful to let your mind relax before entering the exam room, have a walk or chat with course mates (not about the content of the exam). Heavy last minute cramming will make your head thick and while sitting for the exam you will find it difficult to answer the questions. Research has shown that anything you study right before an exam is more likely to hurt than help your performance. The last studied information which is still floating around in your short term memory actually interferes with recall of information kept in your long term memory.)

right brained, left brained or dual brain?

(The brain is composed of two hemispheres, known as the left and right hemisphere. While each hemisphere has unique functions, both hemispheres possess the ability to analyze sensory data, perform memory functions, learn new information, form thoughts and make decisions.)

Seguir leyendo...

(The way you use these abilities determines a large part of our personality and behaviour. By the time we are two years old, one hemisphere begins to dominate our decision-making process. Communication between the two halves is possible due to the corpus callosum and this process continues to improve until the age of 15.)

Brain functions

Funciones de los hemisferios cerebrales.
(Roles of the cerebral hemispheres)

(The left hemisphere specializes in analytical thought. It is responsible for dealing with abstractions, structure, discipline, rules, time sequences, mathematics, categorizing, logic, rationality, and deductive reasoning. It is also responsible for details, knowledge, definitions, planning, goals, words, productivity, efficiency, science, technology, stability, extraversion, physical activity, and the right side of the body.)

(The right hemisphere is responsible for intuition, feelings, sensitivity, emotions, daydreaming, visualizing, creativity, colour, spatial awareness, and first impressions. It is also responsible for rhythm, spontaneity, impulsiveness, the physical senses, risk-taking, flexibility and variety, learning by experience, relationships, mysticism, play and sports, introversion, humour, motor skills, and the left side of the body (the old belief that left-handed people are more creative does hold some scientific credence). The right hemisphere also has a holistic method of perception that is able to recognize patterns and similarities and combines those elements into new forms.)

Hay tres categorías de predominancia hemisférica:

(There are three types of brain dominance:)

(The Left-brain dominant individuals: someone who spends most of their mental energy on logic focused rational thought. The essence of their brain activity occurs in the left side of their brain and logic is their primary filter. Those on the far end of this type can sometimes seem cold or even emotionless.)

(Right-brain dominant individuals: this type of people is more emotional. They usually look at life through the filter of their passions. Those at the extreme end of this personality type might sometimes seem too emotional or even irrational.)

(Dual-brain dominant individuals: people whose minds are dominated neither by logic, nor by emotions. They view life through both logical and intuitive filters.)

Vancouver Art Institute

(The Art Institute of Vancouver has a creativity test to check whether prospective students have natural artistic skills. However, although most human beings can be classified as belonging to one of the types of brain dominance, it is clear that none is superior to the other, and it is the sum of both which gives the mind its amazing flexibility, and what drives effective thinking.)

(The Brain Type Test will determine which half is your dominant half, and to what degree. The test consists of 54 questions and may be completed in about 10 minutes. After completing the test, you will be given your free left and right brain score. You will also be given a small detailed paragraph explaining the characteristics that are associated with your dominant side.)

Roger W. Sperry (1913-1994)

(Many of the methods used for this test were pioneered by Dr. Roger Sperry's research on brain lateralization, for which he won a Nobel Prize in 1981 "for his discoveries concerning the functional specialization of the cerebral hemispheres".)

(When taking the test, speed is not a factor. Answer the questions as truthfully as you can. By the way, my results show that I am 55% left brained.)

¿Arte o Grafiti?

Art versus graffiti

DICCIONARIO DE LA REAL ACADEMIA ESPAÑOLA
grafito (plural: grafiti) (Del it. graffito).
OXFORD DICTIONARY
graffiti: unauthorized writing or drawings on a surface in a public place.
ORIGIN Italian, from graffio ‘a scratch’.

(Graffiti have always existed and found in caves, on buried walls, in the Catacombs of Rome, in ruins, etc. Children have always been fond of writing their names and scribbling on public walls.)

(But at the end of the 60s this practice was taken to extremes (first in Philadelphia, very soon in New York), favoured by the introduction of spray paint and widespread commercial messages.)

graffiti styles

(At the beginning, graffiti consisted of a kind of game based on competition: each "writer" reproduces his or her name in order to make it appear more often than the rest. Very soon, to make names stand out and the small and simple tags – the signature of the graffiti writer – turned into complex calligraphies – wild style or Bubble letters – and huge, coloured letterings – Blokbusters.)

(The difference between masters of graffiti – writers – and beginners – taggers – is the complex and creative work of the finished compositions – pieces– that writers perform. Writers often work in teams, their crew, and they choose where, when and how to make graffiti. They are usually the most skilled with drawing and handling of aerosols.)

graffiti or art

(However, the trouble with graffiti is that some of them are true works of art and others pure vandalism that end up degrading the environment in addition to causing a lavish and unnecessary expenditure on their removing that could be devoted to more useful social purposes.)

(In Philadelphia they came up with the idea of replacing those daubed walls by works of art and for a more effective plan, they proposed the graffiti writers to engage in learning more positive and productive ways to express their creativity, teaching them to paint murals and in collaboration with the community residents, to embellish the neighbourhood instead of damaging it.)

(Since its inception in 1984, the Mural Arts Program has completed more than 2,500 indoor and outdoor murals throughout Philadelphia. This effort has brought art to the cityscape, turning graffiti-scarred walls into scenic views, portraits of community heroes and abstract creations.)

Vila Cruzeiro - Favela Painting

(The example has spread, not only in the United States. In 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn created the Favela Painting project, with the help of the Firmeza Foundation. Their aim is the creation of striking artworks in unexpected places. It collaborates with local people to use art as a tool to inspire, create beauty, combat prejudice, and attract attention.
Their efforts yielded two murals which were painted in Vila Cruzeiro, Rio's most notorious slum, in collaboration with local youth. The artworks have become points of pride in the community and throughout Rio.)

¿Qué creéis? ¿El arte puede cambiar el mundo?
